Position Paper on Fluoridation - American Academy of Environmental Medicine

Fluoridation has been called one the ten great public health achievements of the 20th century by the Centers of Disease Control in the US.  As research continues to unfold the truth about the use of this supposed ‘healthy mineral’ has become clear.  Fluoridation is more likely one of the ten most dangerous public health practices in this country and in the world.  The American Academy of Environmental Medicine’s position is that there is absolutely no benefit to public health that Fluoride should be recommended or utilized.

Fluoride is in every respect a harmful halogen to biologic systems and thus toxic to humans and other mammals.  There is no amount that doesn’t have some deleterious effect on the physiology/biochemistry of most life forms.

Numerous peer reviewed, well designed studies have been performed around the world since Fluoridation began in the US in 1945.  Most showed harm to the recipients of the Fluoride.  Many showed little or no benefit to the dental health in general and in particular reduction of cavity of the teeth, yet its use has been still championed.

Here are some important points gleaned from the scientific literature that dissuades the use of Fluoride in any capacity.

  • Discoloration of the teeth (fluorosis) can be caused by the addition of Fluoride in the drinking water, toothpastes containing Fluoride and treatments with the same at dental offices.
  • Multiple studies show the neurotoxic effect of Fluoridation in children with resultant IQ reduction including and especially in-utero exposure.  It is also linked to attention deficit and hyperactivity as well as to dementia.
  • Fluoride use causes skeletal fluorosis accompanying osteoporosis and osteopenia.
  • Fluoride increases the risk of certain cancers such as osteosarcoma in children
  • Fluoride reacts synergistically with other metals such as Aluminum and Lead creating even greater neurotoxicity.  Lead has more commonly been found in municipal drinking waters around the US adding to the potential of this synergism.
  • Fluoride used in drinking water is hydrofluorosilicic acid, a waste product (not medical grade) from the fertilizer industry that the EPA will not allow to be dumped into landfills or vaporized into the air.  It, too, can contain other contaminants.
  • The pineal gland becomes calcified with chronic Fluoride accumulation which would help explain why many exposed to excess Fluoride over time suffer sleep disorders.
  • Fluoride competes with iodine which impacts thyroid function, kidney function and hyper-stimulates the immune system assisting in the creation of autoimmunity and allergy.

Whereas: the EPA and part of the Dental community contend that Fluoridation reduces cavities and has single handedly reduced dental disease in this country dramatically yet, other countries who never have used fluoride experienced the same and sometimes greater improvement in their citizens dental health.

With all this evidence to the contrary of what is espoused by the EPA, it would seem plausible to at minimum utilize the Precautionary Principle and hold all Fluoridation and dental Fluoride practices until more research is available.  As shared, the preponderance of evidence strongly demonstrates that it is a powerful neurotoxin, probable carcinogen, creates disease in multiple organ systems, synergistically heightens the toxicity of other toxic metals and has not been shown to prevent dental disease any more than countries that used little or none.

Therefore, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine continues to recommend the total cessation of Fluoride use in Fluoridation of municipal water systems as well as in all dental applications.  This is strongly supported by the IAOMT (International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology) as well as many scientists and health professionals worldwide.
